This study explores the research trends in the Korean politics studies by analyzing research articles published in prominent foreign political science journals. We identify and study 228 articles published in top 50 SSCI journals for the last 31 years from 1986 to 2017. Our findings are as follows: first, the number of publication is increasing over time. Especially, authors with Korean nationality tend to publish more frequently after the mid-2000s. Second, publications are not equally distributed across journals. While 12 journals have never published the Korean studies, 7 journals have published more than 10 articles on Korean politics. Third, in terms of research topic, public opinion analyses and studies on economic development take the largest share. Analysis of the number of citations also shows that the developmental state theory related to Korea’s economic growth has attracted large academic attention. Fourth, approximately half of articles study Korea as a single case, followed by comparative studies employing other East Asian countries. Finally, while most articles use qualitative methods, the use of quantitative methods is increasing following the global trend.
