『레이디 수전』 = Lady Susan : ‘Proper Lady’ vs. Femme Fatale

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고에서 필자는 『레이디 수전』의 여주인공인 레이디 수전을 당대 이상인 ‘정숙한 귀부인’과 여성 악당이라는 관점에서 비교·분석하였다. 그녀는 정숙한 귀부인인 척 하지만, 연하남이나 유부남 등 여러 남성과 바람을 피우며 19세기 영국의 ‘정숙한 귀부인’에게 가장 요구되는 아내와 어머니의 의무를 무시하기 때문에 여성 악당이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 그녀는 뛰어난 언변과 이성적인 존재라는 자부심, 그리고 남성에 대한 지배욕에 있어서 평범한 요부와는 다르다. 또한 이처럼 사악한 악녀 레이디 수전에게 모호한 태도를 취하는 오픈 엔딩에서 제임스 경과의 갑작스런 재혼 및 서간체 소설에서 3인칭 서술로 끝나는 결말에 대해 찬반의 많은 논란이 있다. 또한 레이디 수전의 실체를 폭로하고 그녀의 계획을 좌절시키는 것은 존슨 씨이다. 이는 그녀의 계획에도 불구하고 그녀가 가부장적인 영국 사회의 희생자임을 암시한다. 따라서 작가는 레이디 수전을 도전적인 여성 악당으로 만들어 가부장적인 영국사회를 비난하고 있으며, 이런 이유로 이 작품이 작가의 사후 반세기 만에 출간된 것으로 보인다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article analyse Lady Susan Vernon, the heroine of Jane Austen’s posthumous epistolary novel, Lady Susan, by comparing her with the concepts of the ideal ‘Proper lady’ and the femme fatale. Although Lady Susan pretends to be a proper lady, this is belied by her shameless flirtations with younger, sometimes married men, and the disregarding of her responsibility as a widow and a mother, which is the first requirement of a proper lady in the nineteenth century. Lady Susan, however, is not simply a common coquette; she is a witty, headstrong conversationalist, who wishes to control men with her cleverness. The novel’s conclusion has spurred controversy, by reason of its abrupt change from epistolary novel to third-person narration, as well as Lady Susan’s sudden marriage to Sir James in an open-ending that appears to present Austen’s ambiguous attitude to Lady Susan’s behavior. It is Mr. Johnson who reveals Lady Susan’s real identity and frustrates her plans, also. All of these suggests that for all her scheming, she is still a victim of the patriarchal English society parodied by the young Austen. Therefore, due to Lady Susan’s portrayal as a challenging, if unsuccessful, femme fatale, the novel was published posthumously, almost 50 years after it was written.
