20세기 초 ‘세계적 베스트셀러’ <엉클 톰스 캐빈>의 수용과 서사 체험 = Uncle Tom’s Cabin in colonial Korea, the Reception of Global Bestseller in the Early 20th Century

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국 여성 작가 해리엇 비처 스토우의 <엉클 톰스 캐빈>(1852)은 한국과 중국, 일본에서 각각 『검둥의 설움』(1913), 『黑奴籲天錄(흑노유천록)』(1901), 『인자박애의 이야기(仁慈博愛の話)』(1903) 등 다른 제목으로 20세기 초에 동아시아에 소개되었고 번역 텍스트 비교의 관점에서 주로 연구되어 왔다. 이 논문은 미국에서 남북 전쟁 이전 노예들의 삶을 기독교적 관점에서 다룬 작품인 <엉클 톰스 캐빈>이 반세기 이후 동아시아에 수용된 현상을 텍스트 간 번역이라는 관점을 넘어 문학과 문화의 글로벌한 접속이라는 맥락에서 다룬 것이다. 이광수를 비롯한 다수의 문인들이 문학에서 ‘글의 힘’과 ‘이념과 기교의 조화’라는 가치를 설파하는 데 이 작품을 동원한 데 반해, 당대의 수용의 감각 가운데는 ‘세계적 베스트셀러’에 대한 관심 또한 컸다는 점을 발견할 수 있다. 이는 세계적으로 <엉클 톰스 캐빈>의 수많은 판본의 역사가 존재하며 특히 19세기 말 출판 마케팅 경쟁과 세계화의 전략이 본격화한 것과 동궤에 놓여 있는 것으로 파악된다. 이러한 글로벌한 현상이라는 맥락은 1920년대 말 할리우드 장편영화 <엉클 톰스 캐빈>이 조선에서도 개봉하면서 강화되고 또 새로운 국면을 맞이한다. 바로 거대 자본 영화의 상업성과 영화의 테크닉에 대한 관심이다. 영화의 홍보와 감상 양면에서 모성애가 유독 강조되는 것 역시 영화라는 대중적인 호소력이 큰 텍스트가 원작의 이해와 수용에 간섭하고 있음을 보여준다. <엉클 톰스 캐빈>은 20세기 초 서적과 영화의 글로벌한 유통이 식민지 조선에 미친 파급력과 수용의 맥락을 가늠해볼 수 있는 하나의 사례로서, 번역 텍스트를 다양한 역관계 속에서 만들어지고 작동하는 문화 현상으로 고찰할 수 있음을 보여준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Uncle Tom’s Cabin(1852), written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, was introduced to East Asia in the early twentieth century under different titles and has been studied mainly from the perspective of intertextuality. This paper examines the reception of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in the context of global phenomenon related to the publication history and literary experience. While many literary figures, including Lee Kwang- soo, used the work to preach the value of “the power of the written word”, the sense of acceptance at the time was also characterized by an interest in ‘global bestseller’. This can be examined in the history of numerous editions of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in the United States, particularly in the context of publisher’s marketing strategies in the late nineteenth century. The global context was reinforced and entered a new phase when the Hollywood feature film “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” was released in Korea in the late 1920s. The commercialization of big capital films and the interest in cinematic techniques are the two main factors. The emphasis on maternal love in the film also shows that the popularity of the film interferes with the acceptance of the original text. Uncle Tom’s Cabin is an example of the global circulation of books and films in colonial Korea in the early twentieth century, and of cultural phenomena with dynamic literary experiences.
