    As buttons are not only accessory but also submaterial of clothing, they are needed to properties enduring laundering & drycleaning, ironing and bleaching. According to button's materials are various, their properties are different.
    The study was investigated the button's properties in order to know material and design of clothing according to the button's kinds.
    In the method of study, polyester buttons, casein buttons, shell buttons among the commercial buttons were chosen, and the each six buttons were attached to undyed cotton (10cm × 15cm) and covered with a piece of the nylon fabric of similar dimensions and crossed to sew the two together between the buttons. After the specimens were experimented laundering & drycleaning, hot pressing and bleaching, colorfastness was graded using gray scale and button holes' tensile strength was measured classifing 2 holes and 4 holes using Instron. Data of button holes' tensile strength were analyzed statistically by F-test and t-test.
    The following conclusions were obtained as a result of the above laboratory works.
    In the colorfastness, polyester buttons were the most change of colour and staining to hot pressing and the change of colour to dry-cleaning.
    They were good colorfastness to laundering and bleaching. Casein buttons were good colorfastness to dry cleaning, were changed color and stained a lot by laundering, hot-pressing and bleaching. Shell buttons had the loss of luster only by laundering.
    In the tensile strength of button holes, polyester buttons were reduced a little on all the experimentation. Casein buttons were reduced by laundering and bleaching, but were increased by dry cleaning and hot pressing. Shell buttons were reduced by all experimentation except hot pressing.
    As polyester buttons were good colorfastness to laundering and bleaching, are suitable to materials and designs of clothing done laundering. As casein buttons were good colorfastness and tensile strength of button holes by dry cleaning, are suitable to the materials and designs of clothing done dry cleaning. As shell buttons had the loss of luster only by laundering, are suitable to the materials and designs of clothing matching their elegant luster and done dry cleaning.
