While previous studies have analyzed the relationship between aggregated electricity usage and temperature across the country, this study empirically analyzes the relationship between temperature and residential electricity usage using hourly micro data from 390 households over a one-year period from January 1 to December 31, 2022. The impact of weather factors, including temperature, on electricity usage has been analyzed in many studies, but there are not enough domestic studies on the impact of various weather factors on individual households. To summarize the estimation results, the change in electricity demand with temperature is nonlinear, and the threshold temperature is 30.1℃, which is higher than expected. The seasonal estimation found a nonlinear relationship between temperature and electricity use only in summer, but a linear relationship in spring and winter, and a higher electricity use on weekends than on weekdays relative to holidays. However, these Effects also vary by season and age. In summer, humidity plays an important role in determining electricity usage along with temperature, while in winter, temperature and wind speed are important factors. When the day was analyzed by dividing it into six time zones according to the Living Time Survey Table of Statistics Korea, temperature and Sun Duration were significant factors in all time zones, while humidity had an insignificant Effects. When divided by season, we found that the Effects of temperature is relatively constant, while other weather factors such as wind speed or sun duration have different sensitive time periods. In addition, regardless of the season, electricity consumption decreases in the morning hours of weekends and holidays, empirically verifying the different life patterns of weekdays and weekends and holidays. The change in electricity usage due to temperature variations by time of day was more significant during the midday and afternoon periods, when family members are often engaged in outdoor activities, compared to the morning and evening periods. Furthermore, an increase in rainfall led to higher electricity usage in all time periods except the early morning, demonstrating that the impact of weather elements on electricity consumption varies depending on the time of day. Notably, electricity usage during weekend and holiday mornings was lower compared to the same time on weekdays, reflecting higher instances of family members sleeping during these periods. This study empirically analyzed and compared the traditional heating and cooling degree days (HDD/CDD) and actual measured temperature data using regression analysis, revealing that the conventional HDD/CDD method tends to underestimate the impact of temperature on electricity consumption. Although this study was not able to reflect household income or number of household members due to data limitations, we hope that this study, which was analyzed using AMI data, will contribute to the prediction of electricity demand in response to climate change and help us understand behavioral responses to household energy consumption.
