본 연구의 목적은 초등학생들의 낮과 밤에 대한 공간 표상이 어떠한지 알아보고자 하는 것이다. 연구목적의 수행을 위해 2종류의 검사도구를 구성하였다. 지구 기반 관점과 우주 기반 관점에 맞추어 낮과 밤에 대한 공간 표상을 알아보는 첫 번째 검사도구를 구성하였다. 그리고 낮과 밤에 대한 공간 표상 결과를 설명하기 위한 기초자료로 공간 표상 발달을 알아보는 두 번째 검사도구를 구성하였다. 개발된 두 가지 검사도구는 초등학교 4, 5, 6학년 263명 학생들에게 투입되었다. 검사도구 응답내용을 보완하기 위해 8명의 학생을 인터뷰하였다. 수집된 자료에 대해 귀납적으로 유형과 수준을 범주화하여 분석틀을 구성하였다. 낮과 밤에 대한 공간 표상은 유형 분석을, 공간 표상 발달은 수준 분석을 하였다. 각각의 결과를 학년별, 성별로 비교하고, 교차 분석하였다. 그리고 개발된 검사도구의 결과는 그림 모델로 정리하고, 자료를 양적으로 변환하여 비교하였다.
우주 기반 관점으로 살펴본 ‘낮과 밤이 생기는 원인에 대한 공간 표상’에 대해서, 초등학생들은 절반 이상이 ‘지구 자전’으로 나타냈다. 하지만 학생들은 ‘낮과 밤이 생기는 원인에 대한 공간 표상’을 빛에 대한 언급 없이 지구의 자전으로만 설명하거나, 지구의 공전, 거리, 달, 구름을 언급해서 설명하는 등 8가지 유형이 나타났다. 지구 기반 관점으로 살펴본 ‘지구본 위 낮과 밤의 경계에서 바라본 하늘에 대한 공간 표상’에 대해서, 초등학생들은 아주 적은 수의 학생만이 실제와 비슷한 하늘의 모습을 나타냈다. 그 외에 하늘을 표상하는 방법은 노을, 명암, 해와 달, 해가 지는 모습, 달이 뜨는 모습, 구름, 낮이나 밤 중 하나, 지구본 등 10가지 유형으로 분류되었다. 학생들이 실제와 맞지 않는 공간 표상을 하는 이유는 제시된 문항 속 공간 관계에 대해 잘못 인지하기 때문이다. 초등학생들의 낮과 밤에 대한 공간 표상은 교육과정의 영향으로 학년에 따라 공간 표상 유형에는 차이가 났으나, 성별에 따라서는 차이가 없었다.
초등학생들은 공간 표상 발달 검사도구에 대해 발달 단계에 따라 표상하는 방법의 차이를 보였다. 그러나 발달 수준은 학년별, 성별 차이보다는 검사도구 과제특성에 따라 다르게 나타나는 경향을 보였다.
낮과 밤에 대한 공간 표상 유형이 실제의 모습과 가까운 유형일수록 공간 발달 단계 점수 평균이 높아지는 결과를 보여, 낮과 밤에 대한 공간 표상과 투영적, 유클리드 공간 관계 체계의 연관성을 확인하였다.
본 연구를 통하여 얻어진 초등학생들의 낮과 밤에 대한 공간 표상 특징은 초등학생들이 낮과 밤에 대한 학습 시 지구 기반 관점과 우주 기반 관점을 유기적으로 연결하여 생각할 수 있도록 돕는데 필요한 단서를 제공해 줄 수 있다.
