This study investigates how 5-years-old children understand internet in view of its concept, environment, and application. The subjects are ninety seven 5-year-olds of four child care center located in Seoul and Kyoung Gi area, and individual interviews have been performed. The results show that most children start to experience internet at their home, however, they are lacking in understanding what the internet is, how to use it, what to find, which is good or bad, internet rules and etiquettes, and privacy invasions. The fact that computer game turns out to be one of the most exciting internet activities involves risks of over-absorption. Insufficient knowledge about harmful internet sites and on-line addiction demands overall internet safety training. The results of this study provide the basic data for preparing internet starters action plans of proper understanding and safety training.
