    The purpose of this study is to develop web-based Korean vocabulary leaning program for learners of Korean for academic purpose.

    Numerous studies have shown that teaching vocabulary is essential to foreign language learning. However, researchers have pointed out that studies on foreign students have the language difficulties in academic environment, even they have taken advanced courses of Korean as a foreign language. Also many researchers, teachers and students are agree with that vocabulary is important in the academic activities.

    In this study, corpus linguistics methods and a web-based environment are chosen as follows. The Korean Academic Vocabulary Learning Program is applied two methods - 'corpus' and 'web-based environment'. Using corpus can provide real academic texts for learners. Learners can plan to learn academic vocabulary by themselves when to study, how to learn vocabulary and how many entries of academic words by select their own vocabulary learning strategy. Teachers can add and modify the contents easily. This means that learning can be taken for a long time by learners.

    This web-based program is a kind of learning materials that learners can study Korean academic vocabulary. Therefore Korean Academic Word lists should be presented in this learning program. Therefore Chapter 2 presented approximately 1,250 words including technical terms partially from total 13 types - 5 subject areas, as selected and reconstruct from 8 KAW Lists by various researchers in 2003~2008.

    Chapter 3 discussed of 2 types of vocabulary leaning strategies from Schumitt(2000) and Coxhead(2006), reconstructed the strategies by using
    the corpus and web-based concepts, which are adoptable in the program. For example, 'working out the meaning of unknown words' strategy could be implemented by using 'reading' text material on corpus with multimedia program method in web-based environment. And there are a web-based courseware design criteria and a procedural model of learning system in this chapter.

    Chapter 4 consisted of three steps, - plan, implementation, and evaluation. First, KAVLP was consisted of 5 vocabulary leaning menu, that is 'Vocabulary Check' as a pre-test, 'KAV lists' downloadable, 'Building KAV' corpus oriented with vocabulary learning strategies, 'Exercise' various types to confirm learning and 'Final exam' as a post-test. Second, KAVLP presented 1 Learning Management System(LMS), which is MOODLE for interaction between learners and teacher, learner to learner. This device presented 'My Own Dictionary', that is to make a word book. The last part is the evaluation of KAVLP by 3 teachers and 2 users, who tested this courseware program as a student and user.

    As a result, the 5 testers presented opinions. The Advantage is web-based environment can be provide 'anyone', 'anywhere', 'anytime' and 'learner-centered'. However some testers suggested to add real corpus(full academic texts) and more effectible vocabulary leaning strategies. Nevertheless, most testers agreed with necessity of KAW lists and academic learning program.

    This study expect to help Korean learners for academic purpose improve their Korean language skills by the corpus oriented Web-based Korean Academic Vocabulary Learning Program (KAVLP).
