In order to investigate the preservation and maintenance of books in university libraries, this study measured the acidity, degradation and whiteness of 559 books (1901-2000) in the library of Myongji University, took scanning electronic microscope (SEM) photographs and examined the preservation condition of books by age (10 year unit) and by country (Korea, USA, France, Japan and China).
According to the result of measuring acidity, 81.4% of books in the library of Myongji University were acidified below pH 5.4 and most (86.6%) of books before 1980 were below pH 6.0. This suggests that it is urgent to take an action for proper preservation.
According to the result of measuring degradation, among books in the library of Myongji University, those published between 1921~1930 were degraded most severely (1.15) and the mean score of degradation increased significantly in books published after 1960 (2.17). The result on degradation suggests that 84.1% of books in the library of Myongji University need preservation and maintenance treatment.
As for discoloration, 65.3% of books in the library of Myongji University appeared be yellowed.
The result of measuring whiteness showed that whiteness was low in old books and particularly those in the 1920s and 1930s and was high in books published after 1980s.
According to SEM photographs, fibrous tissue of damaged paper had surface erosion and a large number of fine wrinkles, and the fiber was deformed by twist. On the contrary, such phenomena were hardly observed in fibrous tissue of undamaged paper.
In conclusion, the preservation condition of books investigated in the library of Myongji University was similar to the pattern of damage in documentary literature kept in domestic and overseas archives and the biggest reasons for degradation were acidification of books made of acidic paper and natural acidification.
As it is expected that the acidification of books will be accelerated by the continuous increase of acidic paper and the inadequate preservation system in the library of Myongji University, it is important to maintain preservation environment that protect books from change in outside temperature and humidity, air pollution, external impact, etc.
Lastly, this study suggests the use of neutral paper to reduce the cost of maintenance and to preserve literature in the future.
