The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that Merleau-Ponty’s aesthetics explores the problem of historicity as an autonomous thematic that cannot be reduced either to the thesis of the primacy of perception, representative of his earlier “phenomenological” thought, or to the ontological interest of his later philosophy, by examining his “middle” thought (the early 1950s), which has been largely forgotten or overlooked in the literature on Merleau-Ponty’s aesthetics. In so doing, I argue that for Merleau-Ponty, the historicity of art is a non-linear temporal mobility in which past tradition and future creative possibilities are simultaneously intertwined within the artistic production of the present, and is therefore an intrinsically open-ended temporality.
This thesis was written out of three interests. The first was reparative: to locate a syntax peculiar to Merleau-Ponty’s middle philosophy, irreducible to the idioms of the other periods of his thinking, in Merleau-Ponty’s discussion of the historicity of art, which he begins to undertake in a more fully fledged form from the 1950s onward. The core of Merleau-Ponty’s concept of historicity lies in illuminating history not as an ordering of facts but as a meaning-production. I show that this theoretical move of distinguishing the dimensions of facticity and meaningfulness as two constitutive orders of history originates from linking Saussure’s structuralist linguistics to Husserl’s later philosophy of culture, from aligning the linguist’s logic of meaning-genesis (the so-called principle of “diacriticity”) with the philosopher’s genetic logic of historico-cultural meaning (the notion of Stiftung or “institution”). Merleau-Ponty interprets Saussure’s insight that meaning does not inhere in individual signs but is produced from relational differences among signs, and that meaning-genesis is therefore not positively determinable, as an affirmation of the dynamism of meaning formation that undergoes “continued birth,” and seeks to extend this structuralist intuition beyond the synchronic structure of language to the diachronic horizon of culture. It is here that Merleau-Ponty finds Husserl’s discussion of cultural historicity, which likewise grasps it as a productive movement of meaning-relations, fruitful in that it helps Merleau-Ponty argue that the temporal logic that guarantees the fecundity of cultural history is not the unilinear, chronological temporality but a multilinear temporality. According to Merleau-Ponty, the creative act of the present activates a temporality open in both directions, towards the past and the future, by retaking previous achievements with its productive interest while simultaneously opening up a field for subsequent creative efforts. My aim is to demonstrate that Merleau-Ponty’s strategy of translating the genetic logic of language into the productive mobility of history constitutes the originality of his middle thought, which cannot be accounted for in terms of his earlier phenomenological tradition or his later metaphysical turn.
The second interest was a polemical one, to distinguish Merleau-Ponty’s thesis of historical unity, which is the culmination of his aesthetics of the middle period, from any teleological conceptions of history, particularly the kind that a Hegelian philosophy of history would advocate. To this end, I first examine how Merleau-Ponty establishes his unity thesis through critical engagement with André Malraux. By disclosing the factualistic view of history presupposed by Malraux’s museology, Merleau-Ponty proposes instead considering history not simply as a temporal sequence of facts but as a problem of the relation of meaning, and claims that such a shift in perspective enables us to represent the history of art as a history of continuity, unified at a profound level by reconciliation and fraternity between different artistic gestures across time and space, rather than as a history of rupture marked by their superficial antagonism and opposition. Such an argument for the semantic unicity of history, however, seems to be in the vicinity of a certain teleological historical view, for it, too, construes history as a meaningful unity (according to which the progression of history is developmentally narrativized towards the (self-) realization of the ultimate purpose). I argue that the latter philosophical machination, which tends to downplay historical contingency and conceptually pre-establishes the “end,” or the final meaning, of history, prior to history’s actual unfolding, differs from Merleau-Ponty’s conception of historical unity, which emphasizes above all the openness of art history and strives to theorize the generativity itself of art as its historicity, and that Merleau-Ponty’s thesis of the unity of history must therefore be distinguished from the (Hegelian) teleological historicization.
This task, lastly, mobilizes a certain creative interest. I interpret Merleau-Ponty’s distinguishment of facticity and semanticity as a gesture of thought performed for the sake of demonstrating the intertwining (entrelacs) or the chiasmic articulation of the two dimensions constitutive of history, not their separation, and argue that accordingly Merleau-Ponty’s concept of historicity never absorbs the eventfulness of history exhaustively into the unifying movement of meaning. Furthermore, by showing that Merleau-Ponty already conceives of (although not always consciously) the meaning-relations that constitute history within a space of hermeneutical possibilities, intrinsically open to the Other, in other words, already within the horizon of intersubjectivity, I reconstruct his unity of art history not as the self-sufficiency of a closed system but as a “unity of coexistence,” which oneness, I argue, is an open unity that promises difference and novelty yet to come.
