인류 구원의 길 = 『분노는 포도처럼』을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

『분노는 포도처럼』은 1930년대의 어려운 사회적 상황에서도 생존을 위해 끝까지 살아남으려는 농민 조드 일가의 고난의 과정과 도덕적 성숙을 통해 인간의 불굴의 생명력과 사람은 사람답게 살 권리가 있다는 인본주의 사상을 보여주고 있다. 이 작품에서 조드 일가는 모든 사람은 누구나가 다 커다란 영혼의 일부를 가지고 있다는 전직 목사 짐 케이시의 영향을 받는다. 그리고, 그들은 많은 고난을 겪으면서 자신과 가족만을 생각하던 ‘나’라는 차원에서 남을 형제처럼 생각하고 행동하는 ‘우리’라는 차원으로 도덕적 성장을 이룬다. 탐도 가족이라고 하는 울타리를 벗어나 고통 받고 좌절을 겪는 이웃을 위해 무엇을 해야 하는가를 깨닫는다. 특히, 강인한 정신력과 모성애를 가진 마조드는 점차 이웃과 공동체, 나아가 인류를 생각함으로써 궁극적으로 우리 모두에게 밝은 미래를 제시해 주고 있다.
마 조드의 또 다른 분신이며 탐이 구현 하고자 하는 인물인 로자샨은 아기를 사산한 후의 지친 상태에도 불구하고 아사 직전의 사람에게 자신의 젖을 물린다. 이러한 그녀의 마지막 극적인 행위는 ‘살아있는 모든 것은 신성하다’라고 하는 진리를 실천한 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 이와 같이 모든 조드 일가가 처음에는 자기중심적이고 가족 위주였던 태도가 점차 남을 생각하고 생명을 중시하며, 나아가 인류를 배려하는 도덕적 성숙의 변화를 가져온다. 스타인벡은 『분노는 포도처럼』에서 자아성찰과 타인에 대한 깊은 이해와 형제애로써 인류를 구원할 수 있는 가능성을 타진하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Grapes of Wrath is the last of the so-called Labor Trilogy, following In Dubious Battle and Of Mice and Men, and represents the literary culmination of Steinbeck's interest in and identification with the common workingman. Unlike the two prior stories, The Grapes of Wrath is allegorically characterized by a note of optimism and hope for the continuation of a boundless human spirit coping with the difficulties, no matter how sterile and unfavorable the given situations may be. Based on the biblical story of Exodus and the actual historical events, The Grapes of Wrath mainly deals with the possibility of humanity's capacity for survival and moral growth in the face of almost unendurable calamity.
What Steinbeck is willing to convey through the Joads' suffering and their moral growth in the novel is that if people serve the need of others under adverse circumstances, the greatest chance for justice will exist. Steinbeck appears to claim that human compassion for the underprivileged people is essential to save a morally crumbling society. Jim's compassion for others drives him to self-sacrifice. Rose of Sharon's act of sharing by following Ma Joad's tacit concent is a final act to embody compassion for a dying person. In conclusion, The Grapes of Wrath is an allegory applicable to redeem humanity wherever greed and prejudice inhibiting cooperation prevail. The main message of the novel is that compassionate cooperation can be achieved only when people put aside their egoistic interests and are willing to work together to accomplish a common purpose for human co-existence.
