The purpose of this study was to determine the origin of chiastolite-bearing aluminous shale in the Mt. Cheonun area mainly by microscope, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis, in order to contribute to understanding the genesis of deposit.
Chiastolite-bearing aluminous shale occurs mostly in the coal-bearing zone of the Osanri formation and aluminous shale of the Cheonunsan formation.
Under the microscope the aluminous shale showed that the major minerals were chiastolite, kyanite, sericite and black organic matter, minor constituents were muscovite, andalusite, sillimanite and limonite.
The distribution of chiastolite-bearing aluminous shale in the Mt. Cheonun area is irregular. The southern part of the region contains more chiastolite-bearing aluminous shale than the estern part. It is believed that the difference of the grade is due to the intensity of metamorphism.
The chiastolite has been proved to be a thermal contact product of the high aluminous shale that come into with meta-quartz-porphyry.
The chemical composition of chiastolite-bearing high aluminous shale is SiO₂(44.6), Al_(2)O_(3)(42.5), Fe_(2)O_(3)(4.6). SK of the rocks varied from 32 to 37.
