The contemporary design industry is experiencing increasing diversification in employment forms, including the rise of freelancers, one-person design studios, and digital creators, leading to the gradual dismantling of the traditional full-time employment structure. These changes have also impacted the career trajectories of junior college design graduates.
Accordingly, visual communication design education in junior colleges requires strategies that go beyond skill-based training to support students’ self-awareness as creative agents and their ability to respond proactively to a diversified career environment.
This study focuses on the mandatory course “Visual Design Planning and Conception” offered in the spring semester of 2025 at a two-year junior college in Seoul, Korea. It explores how a narrative-based creation class can provide educational connections to enhance students’ career adaptability and self-perception. The course was structured as a project in which students used their personal experiences to develop self-narratives, visualize them as design content, and publish them in the form of digital books. To evaluate the effectiveness of the course, pre- and post-course surveys were conducted to measure changes in perception, and open-ended responses were collected immediately after the course to understand the flow of creative experiences and self-recognition.
The analysis revealed that the narrative-based creation class led to significant positive changes in students’ awareness of their identity as designers, creative self-efficacy, understanding of the meaning of self-narratives, and motivation for practice. Notably, experiences such as “translating one’s story into design,” “external communication through e-book publication,” and “planning based on self-narratives” were key elements that strengthened students’ creative identities and fostered motivation.
In conclusion, this study suggests that narrativebased creation education can serve as an alternative pedagogical strategy that integrates practice and introspection, career responsiveness, and creative agency within junior college visual design education. It highlights the potential of this model to support students in becoming active learners who connect their personal lives with creative practice.
