자유인다움과 여가 - 아리스토텔레스의 시민 교육론의 철학적 기초 = Freedom and Leisure - The Philosophical Basis for Aristotle’s Theory of Civil Education

The aim of this article is to examine the fundamental values inherent in Aristotle’s account in VII and VIII of the Politics of civic education in the best constitution, focusing on the concept of freedom. This article proceeds by reviewing the various conceptual relationships and contrasts introduced by Aristotle in order to reveal the characteristics of freedom and a truly free life. First, with regard to the conception of freedom, the contrast between freedom and vulgarity and the contrast between freedom and usefulness are examined. Next, the concept of leisure, which is emphasized as the most important feature of freedom, is discussed. In order to justify the thesis that education is necessary for leisure, Aristotle introduces new conceptual distinctions and carefully examines the various forms of conceptual confusion it can cause. This article focuses on the distinction between leisure and work and on that between leisure and play. In the last paragraph, the article turns to music education in the best constitution and discusses how the various ideas Aristotle introduced to establish the supreme value of freedom influence his account music education.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목표는 정치학 7~8권에서 아리스토텔레스가 제시하는 최선의 정체 내에서의 시민 교육이 구현하고자 했던 근본적인 가치를 자유인다움이라는 개념을 중심으로 고찰해 보는 것이다. 이 글은 자유인다움과 자유인다운 삶의 특성을 규명하기 위해 도입하고 있는 다양한 개념적 연관 관계와 대비를 차례로 검토하면서 진행된다. 우선 자유인다움과 관련해서는 자유인다움과 직공스러움의 대비, 그리고 전자와 유용성의 대비가 중점적으로 논의된다. 그리고 이를 통해서 ‘자유인답고 고귀하기 때문에 교육되어야 할 것’이라는 표현에 내포된 기본적인 가치들이 무엇인가가 고찰된다. 다음으로는 자유인다움의 가장 중요한 특징으로 강조되고 있는 여가의 개념이 논의된다. 여가를 위한 교육이 필요하다는 주장은 아리스토텔레스의 시민 교육론에서 가장 핵심적인 부분이라 할 수 있고, 이 주장을 정당화하기 위해서 그는 여가와 일의 구분을 도입하고, 여가를 비활동 그리고 놀이와 구분하는 작업을 수행하는데 이 글에서는 이 작업의 구조와 의미가 차례로 검토된다. 그리고 마지막 단락에서는 아리스토텔레스가 최선의 정체에서의 교육 프로그램 내용 중 가장 많은 분량을 할애해 다루고 있는 음악 교육의 문제를 다룬다. 이 부분에서는 특히 자유인다움의 개념을 정립하기 위해서 그가 도입했던 여러 아이디어들이 음악 교육에 어떻게 적용되고, 왜 그것들이 음악을 가장 자유인에 적합한 교육 내용으로 만드는지를 검토한다.
