스페인지배 말기의 필리핀 독립운동: 미완의 혁명(1896-1898)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서 필자의 문제의식은, 장기간의 식민지배(1565-1898)를 받은 후에 종국에는 주권회복과 자국독립이라는 대의를 위해 필리핀인들이 어떻게 능동적이고 자주적으로 대처해 나갔는가를 보고자 하는 것이다. 이런 취지에서 스페인 지배의 말기 상황에 필리핀인들이 진행시켜온 독립운동의 성격을 밝혀보고자 하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 이 글의 구성은 다음과 같다. 19세기 중엽에 이르러 필리핀은 대내적으로 민족적 자각의식을 통하여 민족주의가 성장된다고 보여진다. 그와 관련하여 민족의식이 발생하는 과정을 가장 먼저 살핀다(II 장). 그렇게 결집된 힘을 통해 우선적으로는 식민 지배체제 하에서 개혁적 요구들을 전개해 나간다. 그런 임무는 `개혁주의자들`(reformists)의 몫이었다. 그러나 그런 운동이 전개되는 과정에서 지향점에 변화가 왔다. 그것은 바로 스페인으로부터 분리정책, 곧 자국독립이라는 명분으로의 전환이었다. 필경 충돌은 당연하였고, 이런 과정은 `필리핀혁명`이라고 지칭되는데 그 혁명성은 한마디로 `필리핀의 절대독립`이었다. 그 혁명운동은 독립운동의 구체적 전개양상으로 나타난 것이다. 우선은 독립운동의 성격 변화에 초점을 두어 살피고(III 장), 마지막으로는 독립운동 세력의 분열 양상과 그런 분열이 나타나게 되는 내재적 요인에 관심을 집중시킨다(IV 장). 스페인 지배 말기의 필리핀독립운동은 결과적으로 `미완의 혁명`으로 마감되었음을 볼 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to study the changing characteristics of the independence movement by Filipino people in the final stage of the Spanish rule. The paper also discusses the issues about how Filipino people actively and independently coped with the difficulties to get their independence and sovereignty after the period of being colonialized (1565-1898). The organization of this paper is as follows. Chapter two deals with the growth of nationalism of the Filipino people in the 19th century. They suggested various revolutionary requirements under the system of colonialism, which had been carried out by the Filipino Reformists. However, the goal of the movement had changed in the final stage of the process. In other words, the goal was `the absolute independence` from Spain. This caused an endless conflict with Spain. The conflict was called `Philippine Revolution`. The revolutionary movement was expanded into the various aspects of the independence movement. Chapter Ⅲ focuses on reviewing the changing characteristics of the independence movement. Chapter Ⅳ concerns with the types of separated groups of the independence movement and the internal factors of such separations. From the issues and changing characteristics of the movement, we can conclude that the Philippine independence movement in the final stage of the Spanish rule ended up with so called `Incomplete Revolution`.
