The effects of simple sugar, on Ca metabolism and serum lipids was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats fed 4 weeks containing high sugar(sugar: 100% of carbohyrate-HS), moderate sugar ( 70% sugar and 30% starch-MS), low sugar(30% sugar and 70% starch-LS) or non sugar (starch 100%. -NS). Food intake, body wt gain. PER were higher in HS and MS group than in others groups.
The weights of kidney, spleen and epididymal fat were not different among the groups, but the weight of liver was higher in HS and MS groups than in NS group. Serum total cholesterol wasn't high as the amount of sugar in the diet. but serum triglyceride increased as the amount of sugar in the diet. Feces excretion of Ca was higher in NS group than other groups. Urinary excretion of Ca was not significantly different in four groups, but a little high in HS and MS groups. Bone Ca was lower in HS and MS groups than other groups. Serum Ca was not significantly different in the dietary groups.
