A Study on Classroom English and Lesson Plans in Elementary School:
The “Teaching English Through English” Program English education in Korea has traditionally been targeted for middle school and high school students, with little public concern regarding its teaching in elementary schools. Hence the announcement by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development that the “Teaching English Through English”　program for elementary schools would begin in 2001, was both epoch-making and encouraging. Strong dissention remains regarding its implementation, but this is based primarily on perceived harm the program might do to Korean language acquisition and to cultural identity. However, the majority supportive view is that the program is based on principles of globalization, in that greater time and effort spent on language teaching produces greater achievements. Protagonists also assume that using classroom English continuously will improve both student interest in the language and concomitant mastery of it.
Given the above, and because the program is now operational in the third grade, the main purpose of this thesis is to discuss better methods of English language teaching for elementary school students, who are just beginning to study English as a foreign language. Accordingly, it will discuss students' physical, psychological and intellectual characteristics, teachers　roles, and teacher/student interaction patterns. It will also provide examples of classroom English that teachers can use, and introduce model lesson plans for implementing the “Teaching English Through English”program.
