그림 동화책 등장인물의 얼굴 표정에 대한 연구 = A Study on the Characters' Facial Expression in Picture Books

국문 초록 (Abstract)

어린이의 정서 함양에 큰 역할을 하는 그림 동화책에서 정서와 관련한 감정 표출의 주 발신처는 얼굴인 바, 얼굴표정은 그림의 전체 정서를 전달하고 결정짓는 핵심 영역이라 하겠다. 따라서 그림책 등장인물의 표정은 텍스트가 지시하는 감정에 따라 명확히 표현되어야 할 필요가 있다. 이에 본고는 올바른 표정표현을 위한 출발을 표정근(筋)에 대한 이해로 보고, 찰스 다윈이 제시한 6가지의 기본 감정을 중심으로 이들 표정근의 특징을 살피고, 이를 근거로 기존 그림 동화책에 등장하는 인물표정의 적절성 여부를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 작가의 표현 양식에 따른 형식적 독특성이 우선하여 표정의 고유한 특질이 재현되지 못하거나 작가의 기억과 경험에 의존하여 피상적으로 표현되는 ‘얕은 표현’과, 표정근의 움직임에 기초하여 각각의 표정특징이 재현되어 있는 ‘깊은 표현’으로 표정 표현을 나누고, 전자는 도식성에 의한 표정의 경직화 특징을 보이며 후자는 사실성에 의한 표정의 유연화 경향을 띠는 것으로 정리하였다. 텍스트가 의도한 바른 감정 유발을 위해서는 표정 표현의 적합성이 수반되어야 할 것인 바, 얕은 표현 보다는 깊은 표현을 통해 표정 표현의 질을 높여야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In picture books, facial expression is the key component conveying overall emotion of illustration. Therefore characters’ facial expression should be depicted accurately according to emotion the text describes. So this thesis regards the understanding of expression muscle as the starting point for the proper depiction of facial expression and checks the features of these expression muscle with special reference to six basic feelings Charles Darwin proposed. On this basis, we analyzes the propriety of characters’ facial expression in published picture books. To sum up, there are two types in the depiction of facial expression. One is ‘shallow expression’ that does not reproduce the features of expression muscle due to putting emphasis on illustrator’s unique expression style. The other is ‘deep expression’ that reproduces the features of expression muscle. The former is characterized by schema having tendency toward rigidity, the latter is characterized by realism having tendency toward flexibility. For the proper expression of emotion the text depict, deep expression rather than shallow expression is needed.
