Taegu locates in the central Yo˘ngnam region, with the fertile Nakdong river basin as a hinterland. The city has developed from a castle city since the establishment of kamyo˘ng(provincial office) in choso˘n period to a metropolis with over one million population and diverse functions. This study intends to make clear a change of spatial structure and a transformation of functions of the city according to age. The data used for this study are documents and old maps and have been confirmed through a field work.
Observation drawn from this research are summed up as follows:
(1) The choso˘n period (prior to 1910) : Taegu was a castle city as an administrative and military center, which was based on the traditional agricultural production. This period is a beginning stage of the city, when the builtp-up area was limited to the interior of the castle wall and the growth of the city was stagnated for a long time.
(2) The Japanese colonial period (1910∼1945) : With the construction of the Kyo˘ngbu Railway, the castle wall was removed and the built-up area began to expand outside. at the time, the interor of the city had a dual structure with the Japanese residence district in the northeastern area and the Korean district in the southwestern area. This period was a growing stage of the city, when the commercial section was made in front of the station and commercial activities against the hinterland prospered.
(3) The period after liberation (1945∼1660) : The Liberation and the Korean War brought about an influex of the peaple from abroad and North Korea, and the illegal settlement by them at the periphery formed a poor residence district. This period was a confusion stage of the city as a result of the above facts, when the city became a center of texture industry and education, while the outer expansion of the built-up area was slight.
(4) The period of industrial development (post-1960) : The city became a metropolis by a rapid urbanization and industrialization. The centripetal movement of central functions brought about a Vertical expansion of buildings in C.B.D. The horizontal expansion of the city was achieved by the centrifugal movement of functions of residence, factory and school at the periphery, the result of which brought the formation of a new built-up area particularly in the eastern and western parts. In short, this period was an expanding stage for Taegu.
