The aim of this study was to examine the buffering effect of social support on the stress of the elderly who live apart from their children. The stress of the elderly was investigated in view of the factors such as family relationship, financial problems, health problems, housing environmnt problems. And, the social support was further examined by several factors such as emotional support, informational support, material support, and appraisal support. First, the elderly perceived higher stress in health problems, family relationship, housing environment, and financial problems in the decreasing order. And, the elderly perceived higher social support in emotional support, material support, informational support, and appraisal support in the decreasing order. The elderly who feel depressed was relatively low. Second, In the effect of social support on the relationship between stress and depresson, social support relieves depression derived from stress. Third, In the buffering effect of social support due to specific stress, the stress which is caused by family relationship, financial problemes, and housing environmental problems, has the buffering effect on material support and appraisal support. But, in the case of the stress which is caused by health problems, social support has no buffering effect on depression.
