일반 : 자기희생의 긍정적 그리고 부정적 측면 = The Positive and Negative Side of Self-Sacrifice: New Approach toward Equality and Mutual Services in Korean Family Relationships

The concept of self-sacrifice is so essential to both human love and Christian life. However, despite many apparent benefits, the role of sacrifice in relationships is controversial. Criticisms of self-sacrifice have focused on the hazards of unhealthy extremes. In this sense, the model of self-sacrifice should carefully balance the obligations of regard for others with a legitimate regard for oneself and recognizes the social, cultural, and theological elements required to maintain it. Koreans will benefit much from reflecting on the motives of their self-sacrifice; rather than sacrificing out of coercion or out of obligation and duty, the true motives should be mutually beneficial for all of those involved. It is my hope that Koreans depart from their tendencies of one-sided submission, giving up of self-respect, and wholesale yielding to imposed obligations within its patriarchal culture; and venture into a realm of service seasoned with mutuality and authentic self-sacrifice.
