The Confucianism was adopted as the ruling principle by the first king of the Chosun Dynasty, and consequently the society of th Cosun Dynasty was based on Confucianism and Filial piety and the Feng-shui was grafed onto a confucian society.
Afer their parents' death, descendants performed the best Funeral rite and the ancestral rite. The confucian ideas had heavily influenced on constructing graves regardless of one's position all the Chosun Dynasty period. A size, areas and stoneworks was strictly regulated by the law, since the Chosun Dynasty was a hierarchical society, according to a one's class and a position. It showed that a lower class people was not free from their status in a very rigid social hierarchy.
The Feng-shui thought is that dead people avoid the lifeless ground and that descendants attain prosperity by the Dong-Gi Gamung (response with the same energy), thereby continue the ancestral rite for their ancestors. The endless ceremony of the acestral rite was the root of Filial piety and considered as the first priority.
This research aims to investigate the theoretical background of the Tong-Mac Feung Shui geography, handed down in secret on the royal family and the nobility family, and how this theory was applied to Sang-Sin graves, so that check whether application of the Tong-Mac Feung Shui geography was true or not and elevate the value of cultural assets. For this research, I have selected 10 graves among Sang-Sin graves in Chosun Dynasty, located in Goyang, Paju and Yonchun, and surveyed a dragon shape, Yong-Ipsu, Jwa-Ipsu and grave form. This 10 graves was randomly selected among 365 Sang-Sin graves, located in northern Gyeonggi Province, and surveyed through actual measurement. The further research on stonework of graves was also surveyed together. To include the transformation process of grave shape, this graves have selected by 100 years (1 grave (1400's), 2 graves (1500's), 3 graves (1600's), 4 graves (1700's), 5 graves (1800's).
As a research method, I have referred to domestic and foreign literature, all theses and dissertations, every kinds of reports, advertising and promotional materials publshed by a city and a country and internet materials about a memorial service held before the grave. I have also consulted all literatures of the royal family on consideration, legislation and regulations of the Funeral rite and the ancestral rite, because there is no records for that kind of information about the grave of common people. A regional and a individual family's custom of the Funeral rite and the ancestral rite have been excluded from the survey area and the method. The other Fung-Shui theory, except the Tong-Mac Feung Shui geography, does not apply to this research.
This research reaches a conclusion that 9 graves, except one, coincide the Tong-Mac Feung Shui geography and the Tong-Mac Feung Shui theory is based on the Hoeng-Gi Feung Shui and Sun-Cheon/Hu-Cheon principle integrating the I-Gi theory.
I would like to propose some ideas learning through this survey as follows.
First of all, it needs to reinterpret cultural properties including the royal tombs and the nobility graves from the Feung Shui geography theory.
Second, it needs to make procedures of cultural assets simple so that avoid to be stolen, destroyed, changed and moved to the other place.
Third, the consistent and unified theory is needed to interpret cultural properties.
