Using data from surveys conducted in the past decade, this article examines how Indonesian democracy has been compatible with Islam since the country’s political opening in 1998. Specifically, it carries out a micro-level analysis of how Indonesian Muslims have perceived democratic systems and norms. Findings indicate a growing tendency that Indonesians affected by an Islamist agenda are more likely to oppose democracy than others. In contrast, supporters of Islamist parties do not show such tendency. This article thus has an important implication that mobilization through political parties is expected to increase the compatibility of Islam with democracy.
