바벨탑 이야기 : 도덕교육의 문화적 차원 = The Tower of Babel : The Cultural Aspect of Moral Education

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Some different implications notwithstanding, the two versions of 'the Tower of Babel' which are elaborated by Michael Oakeshott into more proper tellings explicate the impact of the 'rationalism' on moral life. What he calls 'rationalism' is a manner of thinking which strives to put stress on the Ideal independently of the concrete moral lives, and to regard the concrete moral lives as the means to achieving it. The 'rationalism' seems the least amenable to the traditional knowledge of moral behavior, so that the rationalist stands for thought free from obligation to any authority. It should be kept in mind that there can be no place in our daily lives for fortifying power of his 'reason', only a place for making the Ideal manifest.
Moral education in the proper sense aims at recovering the Ideal which is involved in each individual activity, and at recognizing our daily lives as the place for the cultivation of the primordial mind. Here, then, we can hold that the idea of 'metapraxis' can shed light upon explaining the cultural aspect of moral education. From the metapractical standpoint, our daily lives is not to be identified with the immediate satisfaction of needs. Life must be lived as making primordial mind manifest.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오우크쇼트의 두 편의 ‘바벨탑 이야기’는, 약간의 차이에도 불구하고, 공통적으로 합리주의가 도덕적 삶에 끼치는 영향을 드러내고 있다. 합리주의는, 삶의 이상은 현재의 구체적 삶에 시간상 앞서서 결정될 수 있다는 것, 그리고 현재의 삶은 그러한 삶의 이상을 달성하기 위한 수단으로 간주된다는 것을 특징으로 한다. 그 결과, 합리주의는 우리의 삶에서 실천되고 있는 ‘행위전통’을 정당히 존중하지 않음으로써, 삶의 이상을 임의적인 것으로 만든다. 그러나 우리의 삶은 개인의 사변적 사고로 좌지우지될 수 있는 것이 아니라 삶의 이상을 조금씩 실현하면서 사는 삶이다. 도덕교육은 개인이 부지불식간에 실천하고 있는 도덕적 이상을 밝힘으로써, 우리의 삶 자체가 심성을 함양하는 장임을 드러내는 것을 목적으로 한다. 바로 이 점에서 도덕교육의 문화적 차원을 밝히는 것은 우리의 삶을 메타프락시스적 관점에서 재조명하는 것에 있다고 말할 수 있다. 메타프락시스적 관점에 의하면, 우리의 삶은 필요에 의해 지배되는 삶이 아니라 우리 각자가 갖추고 있는 심성을 조금씩 표현하면서 사는 삶이다.
