사회적 자본과 공동체 참여의 관계에 관한 국제비교:한국과 미국을 중심으로 = An International Comparison of the Relationship between Social Capital and Neighborhood Participation: The Case of Korea and the United States

This article reports a study of what social capital leads to community participation in neighborhood settings in Korea and America. A careful review of empirical studies of community participation reveals that the extent of social capital has been used to predict the degree of local community participation. A key aspect of those characteristics is the relation of the internal and external types of social capital to the participation in the formal and informal settings. The author conducted a survey of 266 Korean residents in Seoul, measuring their socioeconomic status, perceived social capital and the degree of community participation. In order for an international comparison, Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey(LAFANS) datasets of RAND Corporation has been analyzed. The results of this study show that the Korean social capital was lower than that of the United States. The community network, friendship, norms were positively associated with the community participation of Korea. The major implications of Korean community participation are that the incentive system for enhancing social capital are designed, the proactive outreach of community nonprofit organizations is encouraged and the subscription organizations are increased.
