Agnew의 일반긴장이론을 통한 한국 청소년의 비행 이해 = Agnew's General Strain Theory and Delinquency Among Korean Youth

To study the relationship between strains and delinquency in a non-Western national context, the present study integrated information on adolescence in South Korea with prior theoretical and empirical work on general strain theory to explain delinquency. Two types of strain, examination related strain and emotional and physical abuse by teachers, which are usually ignored in studies in the United States, are included as independent variables to increase relevance to the South Korean context. Using 385 adolescents in technical and college preparatory high schools as a sample, the study found that parts of GST are very useful in explaining delinquency：(1) there is a relatively strong direct relationship between emotional and physical abuse by teachers and violence as well as property related delinquency and (2) the interaction between emotional and physical abuse by teachers and delinquent friends is strongly related to violence and property related delinquency.The findings indicate that the efficacy of teachers' use of practices defined in the study as emotional and physical abuse, even if these practices are intended to instruct youth, is highly questionable.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

◈본 연구는 청소년들이 경험하는 긴장(strain)과 비행 간의 상관관계를 이해하기 위해, 기존의 일반긴장이론(General Strain Theory)의 이론적 바탕위에 한국의 청소년들이 겪는 문화적 특색을 고려하였다. 외국의 선행연구에서는 다루어지지 않았으나 한국의 상황을 반영하는 두 종류의 긴장(시험관련긴장, 교사의 폭언과 체벌)이 독립변인으로 추가되어 연구되었다.본 연구는 385명의 인문계와 실업계 고등학생들을 대상으로 실시되었으며, 연구결과에 따르면 일반긴장이론은 한국 청소년의 비행을 설명하는데 매우 유용한 것으로 나타났다. 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교사의 폭언·체벌은 청소년의 폭력비행이나 재물비행과 유의미한 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 교사의 폭언·체벌과 불량급우와의 교제 간의 상호작용이 비행에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 조사되었다. 이러한 연구결과에 따라 본 연구는 학생들을 지도하고자 하는 교사의 폭언과 체벌이 기대와 상반된 결과를 보여주며, 따라서 육체적·정서적 처벌의 효율성에 의문을 제기하였다.
