This study study analyzes the correspondence between 164 [오]o and 37 [요]jo Sino Korean readings correspond to Sino Japanese readings based on the JoyoKanji List(2010). The findings are summarized as follows: 1) The Korean readings [오]o correspond to 68 o, 55 ou, 32 jou, 13 u, 4 jo, 1 aQ, 1 oku in Japanese.
2) The Korean readings [요]jo correspond to 27 jou, 9 ou, 1 aku in Japanese.
As seen above, Sino Korean pronunciation o most frequently corresponds to the Japanese Sino Japanese readings o, followed by ou, and then jou.
The correspondence between Korean o and Japanese ou can be explained by the fact that Korean absorbed the Middle Chinese diphthong ɑu as a single syllable o, while in Japanese, au underwent vowel coalescence and lengthening to become ou[o:].
Additionally, the Sino Korean reading [요]jo most frequently corresponds to jou in Sino Japanese readings. This is the result of Sino Korean accepting Middle Chinese eu and similar sounds as the single syllable jo. In contrast, the Japanese reading jou [jo:]reflects the process of vowel coalescence and subsequent vowel lengthening(eu>jou). Furthermore, cases where the Korean reading [오]o corresponds to Japanese jou can be understood as the result of simplification of alveolar dental sounds, where jo changed to o in Korean.
