‘황빠’ 현상 이해하기 = 음모의 문화, 책임전가의 정치

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 문화기술지(ethnography) 방법론을 통하여 황빠 현상의 심층 이해를 시도한다. 첫째 이 글은 기존에 있었던 황빠에 대한 급조된 심리학적ㆍ사회학적 해석들의 한계를 지적한다. 스톡홀름 증후군, 인지 부조화 이론, 믿고 싶은 정보 이론, 유사 파시즘론 등은 황우석 사태를 탈맥락화시켜 황빠 현상이 발생하는 사회기술적 배경을 고려하지 않는다. 둘째 이 논문은 방법론적으로 장기간의 참여 관찰과 심층 면접을 통하여 황빠들이 왜 황우석을 지지하고 어떤 활동을 펼치는지를 분석한다. 셋째 황빠들의 황우석 사태의 해석과 그들의 문화를 통해 ‘황빠’ 현상을 다차원적이고 상호연관된 문화적ㆍ정치적 맥락 속에서 분석한다. 황빠 현상은 공중의 과학 이해와 참여의 한 방식인데 이것은 인지적인 요소뿐만 아니라 문화적, 정치적, 도덕적, 감성적 요소들의 복합적 상호작용 속에서 이해되어야 한다. 즉 ‘황빠’ 현상은 (1) 민족주의적 열망과 미래주의적 비전에 기반한 황빠들의 집단적 감성 (2) 한국 사회 체제에 대한 불신의 문화 (3) 황우석 사태의 복잡합과 이해하기 어려움 (4) 황빠들의 통찰 없는 박식함과 사회과학적 환원주의 (5) 언론의 애국주의, 경제주의, 미래주의 담론의 유포 (6) 정부의 줄기세포연구 거버넌스의 실패, 이 여섯 가지 요소들의 복합적인 상호작용에 의해 일어난다. 이 논문은 황빠 현상을 음모의 문화와 책임전가의 정치로 특징짓는데 이는 사회체제와 권력 집단에 대한 불신에 기반하는 것과 동시에 민족주의적 욕망, 미래주의적 비전, 민주주의적 가치 사이의 긴장과 모순 속에서 발생한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This ethnography investigates how Hwang Woo Suk supporters are organized, the motivations behind their support for Dr. Hwang, and the activities conducted by this group. Theoretically, this paper refutes previous interpretations of Hwang supporters which are based primarily upon hasty psychologizing. Instead, informed by public understanding of science (PUS), I connect the Hwang supporter phenomenon with diverse socio-technical relations emerging during the course of the Hwang Affair. By doing so, I aim to understand the new formations of discourse and activism in the multi-layered processes of friction among science, media, government, and public. My fieldwork consisted of online and offline participant observation from November 2005 to May 2007. In addition to observation of online activities, I participated in street demonstrations, seminars, strategy meetings, and other meetings and events organized by Hwang supporters. Furthermore, I interviewed 18 supporters and 7 other people who were actively involved in the Hwang affair. In order to critically examine Hwang supporters, various social, cultural, and political elements are taken into account: (1) Hwang supporters' collective ethos including nationalistic passion and futuristic vision, (2) the culture of distrust in Korean society, (3) the complexity and unintelligibility of the Hwang Affair, (4) Hwang supporters' semi-erudition and social scientism, (5) the media's role in disseminating discourses such as nationalism, futurism, and economics, and (6) the Korean government's failure to regulate stem cell research. This paper argues that the emergence of the Hwang scandal-related conspiracy is connected to a greater Korean cultural phenomenon questioning the quality of Korean democracy and society. I contend that Hwang supporters’ activities associated with this ongoing culture of distrust exhibit an identity crisis that stems from tensions among nationalistic passion, futuristic vision, and democratic values in Korea.
