Noise is one important negative effect to increase the speech discrimination both people with hearing loss and normal hearing. Sound to noise ratio defines which factor, sound or noise, has higher number. Target sound pressure is higher than noise in environment, then speech discrimination is increase. However, the noise in environment is higher than the target sound pressure, then the speech discrimination is decrease. In analog system S/N ratio is considered the differences between the target sound pressure and environment noise. However, S/N ratio is considered with target sound and noise in speech itself in digital system. The purpose of this study is to analyze the speech discrimination abilities in different S/N ratios with hearing impaired and hearing children. Twenty hearing impaired children and twenty hearing children were participated. Correlation sample t-test was utilized to compare the speech discrimination scores according to different S/N ratios. +24, +12, +6, 0, -6, -12, -24dB S/N ratios were producted to compare the speech discrimination scores for the two groups. More S/N ratios were producted, more speech discrimination scores were increased for two groups. When -6dB S/N ratio was producted, the speech discrimination scores for hearing children is about 25%. However, the hearing impaired cannot discriminate the speech sounds with -6dB S/N ratio. The minimum S/N ratio to expect some speech discrimination score is -6dB for hearing children, however, the minimum S/N ratio is +6dB for hearing impaired children. Therefore this study concluded that the S/N ratio is very important factor to increase the speech discrimination score for hearing impaired children.
