Caused by demanding international emission limitations as well as the ambition to minimize fuel consumption in today’s engines, turbocharged downsizing engines are one of the most popular and effective concepts. As a study project, the general characteristics of a recently developed 1.6l four cylinder gasoline prototype engine with direct injection and an exhaust-gas turbocharger as well as its potentials pertaining to emission and consumption reduction were researched. This paper focuses on the corresponding raw emissions, in particular carbon-particulate matter and total hydrocarbons. In addition to measurements for figuring out the reason for the detected high emission levels, the intended injectors with a suspected overdimensioned static flow rate were replaced. Overall target was the reduction of toxic matters that mainly exist due to suboptimal mixture preparation, inadequate fuel spray guidance or potential wall wetting and piston deposits. The concentrations of hydrocarbons during the first 60 seconds after engine cranking as well as soot in the entire operating range had priority.
