조선 초기 거북선의 출현 배경과 주요 형태 및 기능 = The Turtle Ship’s Introduction in the Early Joseon Period and its Essential Form and Function

국문 초록 (Abstract)

조선 초기 태종 대에 2차례 등장하는 거북선 관련 기사를 통해 조선 초기에도 거북선이 존재했다고 인정된다. 그런데 조선 초기 거북선은 임진왜란 시기 거북선과 달리 그 모습이나 내부 구조, 기능 등에 대한 자료 확인이 어렵다. 사료 부족으로 명칭에 대한 언급 외에 다른 내용은 찾아볼 수 없는 형편이다. 본고에서는 사료의 부족으로 정확한 거북선 모습을 그릴 수는 없지만, 나름 관련 자료를 분석하여 조선 초기 거북선이 출현하게 된 배경과 주요 형태 및 기능에 대해 살펴보았다. 검토한 결과 먼저 거북선의 활동 시기와 지역은 고려 말기부터 조선 태종 15년(1415년) 이전까지 활동했다고 보며, 활동 지역은 왜구의 침입으로부터 수도 방위를 위해 임진강 또는 한강에 배치되어 활용된 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 거북선의 크기는 조선 초기의 중대선 또는 중맹선 정도의 크기이며, 길이와 너비는『경국대전』에 규정된 수치를 활용할 수 있다. 셋째, 거북선의 모습을 재현하려면 외부에 못과 칼을 꽂아서 적이 등선하지 못하는 형태로 만들어져야 한다. 또한 전통전술인 활을 쏠 수 있는 외부 구조와 화전류(火箭類) 등 기본화기류를 발사할 수 있는 구조가 마련되어야 한다. 아울러 적이 충돌해 오면 견딜 수 있도록 선체를 강고(强固)하게 만들어야 할 것이다. 요컨대, 조선 초기 거북선에 대한 대강의 형태가 그려지면 이를 통해 당시의 수군전술에 대한 세부적인 이해와 임진왜란시기 거북선과의 비교가 가능할 것이다. 이는 추후의 연구 과제로 남겨두고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

That the turtle ship existed in the early Joseon period is known from 1413 and 1415 entries in The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty during the King Taejong. However, unlike the turtle ship employed during the Imjin War period, there is no information about its appearance, internal structure, and function, and its existence is known only from the mention of its name in the Annals. In this paper, it is not possible to determine the exact shape of the turtle ship due to the lack of information, but by analyzing the data related to it, it is possible to speculate about the appearance of the turtle ship in the early Joseon period, and its essential form and function. As a result of the review, it is probable that the first Turtle Ship was active from the late period of Goryeo until the 15th year (1415) of King Taejong of Joseon, being deployed and utilized on either the Imjin River or the Han River to defend the capital, Hanseong(漢城), from Japanese invasion. Second, the size of the turtle ship is about the size of the Jungdae-seon(ship) or Jungmaeng-seon(ship) in the early Joseon Dynasty, and the length and width used the values specified in 『Gyeonggukdaejeon』(經國大典). Third, in order to reproduce the appearance of the turtle ship, it must be constructed so as to prevent enemies from climbing the ship, and possess an external structure permitting naval archery, including the traditional tactic of using fire arrows, and a structure permitting the employment of basic firearms. In addition, the hull would be strong enough to withstand enemy ramming. In short, if the rough shape of the turtle ship in the early Joseon Dynasty is drawn, a detailed understanding of the naval tactics of the time and comparison with the turtle ship during the Imjin War period is possible. This is left as a future research project.
