The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the parents' social competence on the children's social competence. In this study, therefore, we would like to investigate the influence of the parents' social competence on the children's social competence and then, to investigate the influence of the each parents' social competence on the children's social competence according to the children's sex.
With regard to these study purposes, the concrete study problems are as follows:
1.Does the social competence of the father and the mother have an influence on the children's social competence?
2.Does the father's social competence have an influence on the children's social competence according to the children's sex?
2-1.How does the father's social competence have an influence on the son's social competence?
2-2.How does the father's social competence have an influence on the daughter's social competence?
3.Does the mother's social competence have an influence on the children's social competence according to the children's sex?
3-1.How does the mother's social competence have an influence on the son's social competence?
3-2.How does the mother's social competence have an influence on the daughter's social competence?
The subjects of this study were 240 children (who are 4-6 years old) of three kindergartens located in Kangdong-ku, Kangbuk-ku, and Seongbuk-ku in Seoul and one kindergarten located in Kyoungki-prevince and flour public children's houses located in Kangnam-ku, Seongdong-ku, and Chongro-Ku in Seoul. And the questionnaires were distributed to all of them. To measure the patents' social competence, the scale revised from Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire(ICQ) by Buhrmester, Furmanm, Wittenberg & Reis (1988) was used in this study. And to measure the children's social competence, the scale revised from Yang, Woi-Jeom (1993), which was originally from lows Social ·Competency Scales(Pease, Clark, & Crase, 1979) was used in this study.
To analyse the data, the frequency ailed the percentage were produced through the SPSS pc program and according to the study problems, the correlation analysis and the stepwise multiple-regression were conducted.
The results of this study are as follows:
1.There was meaningful influence between the parents' social competence and the subfactors of the children's social competence. The father's social competence had an influence on the children's social competence meaningfully. There appeared that the father's initiation had a non-static influence on the children's activity, the father's conflict management had a static influence on the children's stability and the father's assertion had a static innfluence on the children's cooperative. So, the less the father intervened, the more the children's activity was live. The more the lather controlled his emotion well in the situation of convict and had the ability to respect others well, the more children were stable. And the more the father had the ability of assertion, the more the children's cooperative influenced.
2.The mother's social competence had an influence on the children's social competence meaningfully. There appeased that the assertion of mother had a static influence on the children's stability, and the mother's self-disclosure had a non-static influence on the children's cooperative. So the more the mother spoke her mind clearly and fairly, the more children were stable. The less the mother did self-disclosure, the more children reacted positively in the interaction with another person.
3.The father's social competence had an influence on the children's social competence meaningfully according to the children's sex. There appeared that the father's self-disclosure had an influence on the son's activity. So, the more the father had high ability of serf-disclosure, the more the son's activity was high. There appeared that the lather's emotional support had a static influence on the daughter's hypersensitive, the lather's assertion had a static influence on the daughter's cooperative, and the father's emotional support had a non-static influence on the daughter's cooperative. So, the more the father's emotional support was high, the more the daughter's hypersensitive was high. The more the lather spoke his mind clearly and fairly and the less he did the emotional support, the more the daughter's cooperative was high.
4.The mother's social competence had an influence on the children's social competence meaningfully according to the children's sex. There appeared that the mother's self-disclosure had a non-static influence on the son's hypersensitive and the mother's assertion had a static influence. So, the more the mother did the self-disclosure well and the less she did the assertion, the less the son's hypersensitive was low. However, there appeared that the mother's social competence didn't have an influence on the daughter's social competence.
