This study is for Korean political party unification. Korean political parties have been dividing and unifying. Our political party unification has been acting as one of the most important variables in the change and development of Korean party politics.
This research is to verify why Korean political parties have tried to unify and to examine meanings, characteristics and problems of Korean political party unification.
The characteristics and problems of Korean political party unification are as follows : First, party unification is formed under the unstable political and social background. Second, party unification is formed for power oriented interests of few power elites. Third, party unification is the result of power sharing negotiation, especially such as leadership systems. Fourth, party unification is not for the unification of ideol9ogy and polices but for the overcome of realistic political situation, such as election and unstability of political party systems. Fifth, heterogeneous party unification comes to divide the party into inner factions.
In conclusion, the political party reforms to solve above problems is needed. This research suggests as follows : First, party unification must be formed not by few bosses but by partisans. Second, parties must have explicit identity. Third, institutionalization of party politics is important. Fourth, regionalism of parties must be eliminated.
