This study surveyed the elementary and middle school teachers` perceptions on the amount and the degree of difficulty of contents in the textbooks. This study focused on the 3, 4th and 7th graders` Korean language arts, math and social studies textbooks and used the questionnaire survey to identify and compare the teachers` perceptions. This study have two distinctive features. One is that this study confirmed the teachers` perceptions on the three parts in the textbooks. The three parts are the basic, enriched and supplementary contents. The other feature is that this study analyzed comparatively the elementary and middle school teachers` perceptions. The results of this study are as the follows: First, many elementary and middle school teachers perceived that the basic, enriched and supplementary contents in Korean language arts and social studies textbooks were in large quantities and that the basic contents in math textbooks were too. Therefore the amounts of contents in these areas need to be reduced more properly. Second, many elementary school teachers perceived that the basic contents in Korean language arts textbook were difficult, and many middle school teachers perceived that the enriched contents in Korean language arts textbook were difficult. And many elementary and middle school teachers perceived that the enriched contents in math and the basic, enriched, and supplementary contents of social studies textbooks were difficult. Therefore the difficulties of these areas need to be lower. Third, on occasions the teachers` perceptions on the amount and the degree of difficulty of the contents were rather various than uniform. These various perceptions of teachers need to be considered respectively. Therefore I suggest that the power to control the amount and the degree of difficulty of contents in the textbooks at the schools be extended more and more. This study suggests these alternative studies. Firstly this study used the questionnaire survey. Therefore the further study needs to use the qualitative research methodologies including the observations of the instructions or the deepen interviews with the teachers. Secondly this study analyzed the teachers` perceptions. To enhance more the value of the textbooks, the rationalization of contents needs also to be approved by students. Therefore the further study needs to analyze the students` perceptions.
