The purpose of this study is for finding the components and the scale developments of Korean religiosity and for proving its effects on the meaning of life. To achieve this goals, 3 types of researches were performed in this study.
In the research 1, to find the components of Koreans religiosity, surveyed total 219 people who are protestant, catholic, and buddhist with open-ended survey to find out how they react activities and behavioral activistic experiences with their mental and psychological activities arose by when their religiosity was high. As the result, mental and psychological side, and activities and behavioral side of religiosity was analyzed into 3 dimensions. These 3 dimensions are personal, social, and religious dimension. The personal dimension included positive, self-control, resilient, satisfaction of life, dignities, psychological stability, earnest. The social dimension circumscribed helping others, concerning for others, love for others, relationship with others, and volunteering activities. The religious dimension included religious lives, missionary work, donating or offering, duties of religion, attending religious activities, confidence of religion, following the doctrines, sacrifices, and after this life.
The research 2 and 3 were performed with total 1,431 people who are protestants, catholic, buddhist, and non religious people. In research 2, 6 factors of Korean religiosity were extracted through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. subordinate factors were religiosity, goal setting, humility, families, economic accomplishments, social relationship. For external validity, correlation analysis was performed between newly developed scales of Korean religiosity and existing scales of religious orientation. Newly developed scales show high validity with existing scales of religious orientation.
In the research 3, examined differences of religiosity, meaning of life, happiness and volunteering between believers. The results show all variables have differences between believers. Believers have higher awareness for religiosity, meaning of life, happiness and volunteering than non-believers. As the results of correlation analysis between religiosity, meaning of life, happiness and volunteering, all variables related with religiosity were in positive correlation. Also the results of structural equation modeling show significant paths of religiosity to happiness, religiosity to volunteering, happiness to meaning of life, and religiosity to meaning of life.
Overall, these results show religiosity are not only for religion, but also psychological, social, cultural, and historical variables in life. Also this study implies religiosity has positive correlation to pursuit higher standard for meaning of life.
