      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims at helping modern readers understand the teachings of Huineng (慧能), the Sixth and Last Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, included in the Buljojikjisimcheyojol (佛祖直指心體要節, Anthology of Great Buddhist Priests" Zen Teachings, abbreviated as Jikji) better through comparing it with the Four Noble Truths, the heart of Sakiyamuni Buddha"s teaching.
Huineng argues that his teachings are meant for "men of the highest Vehicle"; the essence of which can be summarized as follows: Sudden enlightenment (頓悟), No-thought (無念) as the main doctrine, Non-form (無相) as the substance, and Non-abiding (無住) as the basis. A special attention was given to Huineng"s teachings in the Jikji to analyse it in its relation to the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch (六祖壇經) and to compare it with the Buddha"s teachings. The First Sermon of the Buddha (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, 初轉法輪經) was chosen and analysed to find how close Huineng"s teachings are to those of the Buddha. The three main elements of No-thought, No-form, and Non-abiding were analysed in terms of the Noble Eightfold Path (八正道): Right View, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration.
As a conclusion, modern readers who try to understand Huineng"s teaching in Jikji are strongly recommended to be informed of the Four Noble Truths before they put Huineng"s teachings into daily practice and use for a life free of a variety of stress.
