In idiomatic, cultural experiences and common cognitions of members from a community are reflected. Thus, the idiomatic expression can be treated as one of the required linguistic factors for foreign learners in order to communicate with the members of the community without any difficulties. However, it is very important to carefully select new lists of learning for foreigners on the present time basis because of the current circumstances, which sometimes make some idioms expression disappear in daily lives usage or lose their meanings partially.
As a matter of fact, a lot of studies on selection lists of idiomatic expression for foreigners are now in progress actively. Especially, by proposing the idiomatic expression with their frequency of use, which is firstly considered, the studies have been focused on corresponding the idiomatic expression in the studies to their frequency of use in real lives. However, the recent studies can be treated as unbalanced ones in that they lost their consistencies because of their focuses on the frequency of idiomatic expression that can be found only in the Korean language learning materials which were selected as the main source of their studies. The troublesome facts of these studies are in one of the followings; (a) required idiomatic expression for foreign learners, which should be dealt in their studies, were excluded, (b) unnecessary idioms were included, or (c) the idioms were selected without the learners' understanding levels. Those problems came from both the lack of obvious criteria for selection idiomatic expression and the lack of systematic methods for presenting the idiomatic expression with distinctive stages. Therefore, it is urgent to select the idiomatic expression, which should be acquired by the foreign learners, and the list of the idiomatic expression as well as the systematic methods for picking out the idiomatic expression.
In this study, the target learners are not the general foreign learners but the Chinese learners, recognizing that there is difference of perceptions in individual learners from different countries, and different cultures. In addition, the target idiomatic expression of this study are related to 'hand,' and 'foot,' by which the purpose of this study is to provide some methods for selection level-lists.
In order to select level-lists, this study proceeds as follows; in Chapter I, the purpose and the necessity of this study is made through investigating the precedent studies on idiomatic expression. In Chapter II, terminologies, and their concepts and categories as well as the importance and meanings of idiomatic expression are discussed. In Chapter III, under the decision that it is useless to show foreign learners the idiomatic expression that can scarcely be used in daily lives, the list of idiomatic expression is adopted as a final learning content by excerpting idiomatic expression, which are related to ‘hand’ and ‘foot’, from idiomatic expression dictionary by Park, Young-Joon and Choi, Kyung-Bong(1996). Some idioms which cannot be found in the corpus data from ‘the Final Product of 21st Century Sejong Project’ are corpus filtered out. Also, even though the idiomatic dictionary can be found in the data, if they cannot be used in daily lives, they are filtered out, too. In Chapter IV, after investigating the problems of the existing selection for level-lists, a new criteria is selected for the purpose of correcting the problems. On the basis of the criteria, the methods for selection level-lists are also discussed with focusing on idiomatic meanings, referring the ‘Report on Selecting Korean Vocabulary for Learning’ by the National Institute of the Korean Language(2003). At last, in Chapter V, all the arguments and claims discussed in the previous chapters are summarized.
