데이비드 길훌리(David Gilhooly)의 작품분석 = A Study on David Gilhholy's Works -Focusing on semiology of C.S Peirce-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

도자는 실용을 중시하는 기(器)의 형태에서 벗어나 자유로운 표현방식이 가능해지면서 그 기능과 형태에 다양성을 띄게 된다. 이러한 변화에 따라 작품을 해석하는데 있어서 기존의 역사나 담론형식에서 비롯된 비평적 접근방법이 아닌 새로운 분석방법이 제시되어야 한다고 생각한다.
따라서 본 논문은 논리적인 접근방법을 적용해 현대도예를 분석하고자 한다. 기호학은 논리적인 접근방법으로 모든 사물을 하나의 기호로 보고 기호가 가지는 성격과 관계를 통해 사물의 구조를 이해할 수 있다. 본 연구는 기호학의 주요 연구자인 찰스 샌더스 퍼스의 기호의 의미를 3가지 방법론에 의거하여 체계적으로 도출할 수 있는 이론을 제시, 적용하여 현대도예작가 데이비드 길훌리의 작품을 분석하였다. 기호학은 지금까지 조형예술분야 작품을 분석하는 효과적인 방법론으로 폭넓게 적용되었으나 현대도예작품을 분석, 비평하는데 있어서 기호학적 접근법을 이용한 사례는 드물기 때문이다.
그러나 데이비드 길훌리의 작품을 현대도예사 전체 범주에서 고찰하지 못하고 그의 작품양상에 대해서만 분석하는데 그쳐 다른 현대도예작품과의 차별성에 대해 제시하지 못한 점이 아쉬움으로 남는다. 본 연구를 통하여 기호학이 현대도예 작품을 분석함에 있어서 비평적, 다각적, 객관적인 해석을 위한 새로운 방법론으로 제시될 수 있기를 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Contemporary ceramics adapt different functions and forms as they no longer follow traditional vessel forms, while still enable to show diverse methods of expressions. In accordance of these changes, comtemporary ceramics should't be interpreted critically any more, which came from previous history or any formats of discourses, but new methodologies are needed to be suggested.
In this study, contemporary ceramics is analyzed through logical approaches. Semiology recognized each object as a sign, which defined through logical approaching methods, and helps to understand the structure of an object from its own nature and contacts. One of the most renowned semiologist, Charles Sanderson Pierce proposed the theory that can derive the meaning of a sign systematically on the basis of three different methodologies, and contemporary ceramic artist David Gilhooly's works are analyzed through meiotic approaches. Semiology was widely applied to analyze formative art works until today, but it is hard to find any examples of using semiotic approaches to analyze contemporary ceramics.
However, David Gilhooly's works are analyzed without contemplating in the category of contemporary ceramic history, distinction amongst other ceramic artists' works was unable to be suggested in this study. It is expected that semiology be presented as a new method to analyze contemporary ceramics through the study.
