The study on Chil Sung Do(七星圖) whose works in the late Chosun Dynasty remain in large numbers is insufficient as they has not been noted relative to the number or religious depth of those works. However, Chil Sung Do(七星圖) is considered having a high value of artistic history since it exhibits the characteristics and types of faith Chosun Dynasty Buddhistic paintings in many ways. Thus, this paper, in researching on the developmental phase of Chil Sung Do(七星圖) in the late Chosun Dynasty, made an attempt of searching for the regional styles through the methodology called regional study by fixings its eyes on the type of group artistic activity by the temple gate centered Buddhistic artistic society instead of the existing general approach.
It selected Chil Sung Do in Cholla-do and Kyunggi-do showing the most remarkable deviations in geographical, Buddhistic cultural conditions as the objects of study. Ahead of reviewing the works in each region, it arranged the origin of Chil Sung Do(七星圖) faith becoming the formative background of Chil Sung Do(七星圖) and Buddhistic acceptance, the function of Buddhistic statues, the interchanging relation of star faith with Taoism, and its Korean development and the construction period of its stately mansion after entering into Buddhistic temples through Buddhist scriptures and literary data. Then, it examined how the painting images of late Chosun Dynasty Chil Sung Do(七星圖) were handed down and transformed and what effects they had on the establishment of regional styles through the previous works to be the base of transmission and influence relations of painting images.
This paper started the study on Chil Sung Do(七星圖) of the Chosun Dynasty with So Jae Hoi(消災會) engraved in the main part of 3-story tower, Wongaksaji 10-story stone tower.
Then it compared the stylish characteristics of Cholla-do and Kyunggi-do and arranged them by classifying Chil Sung Do(七星圖) focused on Chi Sung Kwang Yu Rai(熾盛光如來) based on religious rituals largely into three parts and investigating major works one by one.
This research admits that this first regional and comparative study has many limits in Buddhistic history of art and thought. However, this research could proceed thinking that anyone should make an attempt as there was no study of this kind in the past.
Thus, this research sincerely hopes this study would be of some service in clarifying the significance and situation in Chil Sung Do's artistic history.
