      BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Acai berry (Euterpe oleracea Mart) is one of super foods containing various antioxidant materials. It is used as a functional food for preventing cardiovascular diseases.
      This study investigated the effect of Acai berry powder intake on the plasma lipid levels and weight gain in the rat.
      MATERIALS/METHODS: Six-week-old Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed AIN-93G diet (Control, C) or Lard-based high fat diet (High fat control diet, HFD) without any added Acai berry solution or high fat diet with 50mg per kg body weight of Acai berry solution (HFD-AB50) or with 100mg of Acai berry (HFD-AB100) or with 150mg per kg body weight (HFD-AB150).
      YOP (Control) or 250 mg of YOP per kg of body weight (D250) for 4 weeks.
      Plasma lipids level was determined using a commercial kit. RESULTS: There were significant differences not occurring in the plasma triacylglyceride and HDL-cholesterol levels according to Acai berry intake whereas
      the plasma total cholesterol level in the Acai berry HFD-AB50 group was significantly lower than that in the HFD-C group or Control group. Compared with the control group, food efficiency ratio was decreased in all of the other groups except in the HFD-AB150 group.
      CONCLUSION: Acai berry can lead to an improvement of total cholesterl causing high fat diet with the efficacy of Acai-berry.
