A Study of Mutuality in Interreligious Dialogue and Mission in a Multi-Religious Society

This study investigates mutuality in interreligious dialogue as a demand of the multi-religious society and mission which is essential mission of Christianity. The aim of this study is to present theological and practical common ground both of mission and of interreligious dialogue and to suggest thereby pastoral direction. Also it is to be hoped that this study will contribute to the further studies about pastoral mutuality of interreligious dialogue and mission. This study considerably examines the meaning of a multi-religious society, interreligious dialogue, and mission in order to draw mutuality of the common ground of mission and interreligious dialogue.
The first chapter attempts to understand the meaning of a multi-religious situation and searches the reason why a multi-religious situation is considered as a challenge in modern society despite the multi-religious situation has always existed. Additionally, analysis is made on the perspectives that Christianity has on other religions according to Alan Race's three types. And especially the threats made against the identity of Christian through various challenges on Christianity posed by theologian of pluralism is also examined in this chapter.
The second chapter reviews a theoretical consideration of interreligious dialogue as a demand of the multi-religious society and the mutuality of Mission which is essential mission of Christianity. It attempts to infer the relationship between interreligious dialogue and mission through discussing its background of appearance and definition of its concept as well as the origin and basis of mission and changes of its meaning.
The third chapter, prior to discussing mutuality between interreligious dialogue and mission, investigates the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church toward interreligious dialogue and mission after Vatican Council Ⅱ. In this chapter, it is examined that how the effort of Church to balance the power on universality and distinctiveness affects the relationship between interreligious dialogue and mission, and also its theological direction is introduced. Furthermore, theological and practical basis of mutuality between interreligious dialogue and mission is identified, and pastoral direction is suggested based on the theological and practical basis discussed earlier.
In the last chapter, the dialogue and relationship between interreligious dialogue and reality in Korea are examined in terms of the dialogue of life, the dialogue of action, the dialogue of theology, and the dialogue of religious experience.
It is to be hoped that this study will serve as a platform for general recognition that interreligious dialogue and mission are not obstacles for each other but mutually support and strengthen, and will make them contribute to common good as a result of realization in actual life.

국 문 초 록

본 논문의 목적은 다종교 상황인 현대사회에서 시대의 요청인 종교간 대화와 그리스도교의 본질적 사명인 선교의 상호성을 고찰하는 것이다. 이러한 고찰을 통하여 종교간 대화와 선교의 신학적, 실천적 공통기반을 제시하여 사목적 방향성을 제시하고자 한다. 또한 종교간 대화와 선교의 사목의 상호성에 관한 후속 연구에 도움이 되고자 한다.
따라서 다종교 상황과 종교간 대화 그리고 선교의 의미를 충실하게 살펴보고, 그에 따른 종교간 대화와 선교의 공통 기반에서 상호성을 도출하고자하였다.
Ⅰ장에서는 다종교 상황이 무엇을 뜻하는지에 대해 이해하고, 다종교 상황이 과거사회에도 존재하고 현대사회에도 존재하는데, 왜 현대사회는 다종교 상황을 도전이라고 생각하는지에 대한 이유를 찾아보았다. 또한 다종교 상황에서 그리스도교가 타종교를 어떠한 관점으로 바라보는지 앨런 레이스의 3가지 유형으로 알아보았으며, 특히 다원주의 신학자들이 그리스도교에 주는 여러 도전을 통하여 그리스도교인의 정체성에 위험을 주는 것이 무엇인지 살펴보았다.
Ⅱ장에서는 시대의 요청인 종교간 대화와 그리스도교의 본질적 사명인 선교에 대해 이론적으로 고찰 하였다. 종교간 대화의 출현 배경과 개념 정의, 선교의 기원과 근거 그리고 선교의 의미 변화를 통해 종교간 대화와 선교의 연관성을 유추하고자 하였다.
이어서 Ⅲ장에서는 종교간 대화와 선교의 상호성 고찰에 앞서, 제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후의 교회가 종교간 대화와 선교에 대해 어떠한 입장을 취하고 있는지를 고찰하였다. 이 부분은 교회가 하느님의 모든 사람을 향한 구원의 보편성과 예수 그리스도의 유일성과 구원이 이루어지는 도구인 교회의 특수성에 관한 힘의 균형을 어떻게 잡으려고 노력하는지에 따라 종교간 대화와 선교의 연관성에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 짚어 보았으며, 이를 토대로 종교간 대화와 선교의 신학적 방향성을 소개하였다. 이어서 종교간 대화와 선교의 상호성에 있어 신학적, 실천적 근거는 무엇인지 알아보고, 이를 근간으로 사목적 방향성을 제시하였다.
마지막으로 한국의 종교간 대화가 한국의 현실과 어떻게 연관성을 가지며, 현재 어떠한 대화를 하고 있는지 삶의 대화, 행동의 대화, 신학적 대화, 종교적 체험의 대화의 방향성 안에서 살펴보았다.
이러한 논문의 연구 과정을 통해, 종교간 대화와 선교가 걸림돌이 아니라 상호성 안에서 서로 지지하고 키워주는 것이라는 것을 인식하고, 구체적인 삶 안에서 실현되어 공동의 선에 이바지할 수 있게 되리라 기대하는 것이다.
