The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the actual conditions of disabled students' well-being in Duksung Women's University. The study diagnoses the problems of handicapped facilities and proposes improvement strategies for the problems. The study conducts a field survey and code evaluation of 11 buildings focusing on handicapped facilities. The survey results demonstrate that current installation of handicapped facilities on campus is generally insufficient. Since the campus is on flat surface, it is a great help to disabled students. However, the survey illustrates that main entrances of buildings tend to stairs, that handicapped toilets are not enough, and that the convenience of vertical movement in building is very low.
The study proposes following guidelines for improving handicapped facilities on campus.
1) Currently arranged handicapped facilities on campus should be adjusted and modified to fit requirements of handicap codes and manuals in order to accommodate all disabled students' use.
2) Buildings under planning should be fully considered handicapped facilities before construction.
3) The library, the student union and the administration building should bet ready handicapped facilities at first, since student use those buildings frequently.
4) Handicapped facility maps and signs should be made to provide facility information to disabled students.
5) In addition to improve physical condition for disabled students, the disabled students assistant center can run a helper program, a reserved handicap parking program, a reserved seat program, and a building and a lecture room exchange program to reduce disabled students' inconvenience.
6) Handicapped facilities once installed should be well maintained.
7) Surveys on actual condition of disabled students on campus at least once a year should be conducted to figure out the number of disabled students, types of the disabled, needs for fulfillment of disabled students' well-being, and to provide proper handicapped facilities and supports.
