The purpose of this study was to determine the most effective instruction for selectively contracting transverse abdominis (TrA) thickness during abdominal drawing in maneuver (AIM). Health young subjects (10 males, 10 females) participated in this study (age: 22.45 years, height: 156.09cm, weight* 53.89kg).
All participants lie on the table and flexed knee 90 degrees with leg at the shoulder-width. And then subjects performed ADIM according to four instructions ; Tuck your abdomen in / , Tuck your navel in / , B reathe in deeply through your nose and then out slowly through your mouth /, Contract your abdominal muscles like letting a fart out/ While subjects perform ed three times ADIM by each instructions, the thickness of TrA captured by ultrasound, and then m ain investigator measured the thickness of TrA on captured image. All data analyzed with repeated ANOVA with Bonferroni correction to com pare TrA thickness according to instructions. The thickness of TrA was significantly greater with instruction of Breathe in deeply through your nose and then out slowly through your mouth / than with instruction of Tuck your tummy in /, Tuck your navel in / ( p 〈 .05). From those results, we suggest that Breathe in deeply through your nose and then out slowly through your m o u th / is most effective instruction for selective contraction of TrA muscle.
