In this paper we study the followings.
First, classify error patterns which students commit in the process of problem solving.
Second, to cope with these error patterns study releveant teaching methods and apropriate remedy strategies.
We can summarize the procedures are result of this study as follows. First, we classified the error types which appeared in solving word problems into two parts for each stages of Polya's problem solving, i.e., understaning, planning, execution, and examining the solutions.
Second, we partitioned students into three groups(high, middle, and low) according to their ability to solve problems and characterized the error types of these groups. Through this we got the result that there are different traits of error type among these three groups.
Third, we grouped problems into three categories, knowledge, comprehension and application which were defined by B.S. Bloom. And investigated the error types of each group of students along for these three categories. We found out that the trends of error typs which these three groups of students show are different. One remarkable result is that in the stage of examining solutions the high ability student group are more apt to commit error compared with the other groups.
Fouth, as an appropriate method to enhance the ability to solve word problems, we recommand to use frequent questions at every stage of problems solving. And in the course of mathematics teaching, we should take into account the student's ability.
