국민불안 해소 결정요인에 관한 실증적 연구 -박근혜정부의 안전정책을 위한 제언- = An Empirical Study on the Determinants of Reducing Anxiety Among Citizens in Korea

From the initial stage, the Park Guen-hye government has been inaugurated while setting its priority as a 'security policy' for the sake of the public's safety. This statement reflects the recognition of the current fear from numerous risks so that it would not be feasible to gain genuine golden days without guaranteeing the citizens' safety. Thus, this study primarily focused on ferreting out the kinds of risky factors that concern South Korean society today. This study breaks risk factors into four main categories, made up of a total of twelve factors (sexual assaults, child molestation, family violence, school violence, danger from food safety, violent crimes, general accidents, car accidents, accidents from equipment and facilities, industrial disasters, pollution and natural disasters). The element which the public fears the most is found to be sexual assaults for children followed by school violence, sexual assaults, violent crimes and food safety violations. Secondly, this study analyses the interplay between the various factors such as social, cultural, governmental, and institutional matters, and the level of public anxiety. As a result, there is little alleviation of public anxiety regardless of the government's efforts (e.g. cooperation of public or private societies, financial or humanitarian support for safety and so on) to do so. However, it appears that the public trust in government does have certain degree of affect on the effectiveness of the government's mitigation of those risky factors. Additionally, those in the public that have more media exposure tend to be the most anxious group. Based upon aforementioned results, we discuss policy implications in the paper.
