This paper aims at revealing some similarities between identification of Naess and great compassion of Buddhism in a comparative way. Identification means that one respects all beings of the universe by taking them as oneself. Individuals transform themselves from a self into a big Self by extending objects identified. Great compassion means that one realizes interdependence of all beings, takes them as oneself, and cares them just like oneself. This paper reveals the following similarities. Identification and great compassion are based on holistic ontology that considers everything as interconnected one. So they are a cognitive practice. Yet they put emphasis on emotional sympathy. In identification and great compassion, individuality of each life is respected and all beings help each other interdependently. Identification and great compassion nullify the duality of self-benefit and other-benefit. Through identification and great compassion, the ultimate goal of Self-realization and enlightenment are achieved. This paper suggests that identification of Naess and great compassion of Buddhism can be chosen as an attitude of ecological life.
