부모의 수용과 청소년의 공감발달 = Parental Acceptance and The Development of Adolescents` Empathy

This study was to find the effects of perceived parental acceptance on the empathic characteristics of adolescents. The parental acceptance scales and the emotional empathy scale were administered on a sample of 2,125 secondary school and university students in Kangnung city. The rationale was that adolescents who grew up under two contrasting types of parental behavior, such as acceptance or rejection, would show differences in their empathic characteristics. Two contrasting groups were formed on the basis of the subjects` total mean scores on the parental acceptance scales. The differences between the means of two groups old empathic characteristics were analyzed, using t-test. As expected, the students who scored higher on parental acceptance level than those who didn`t showed significantly more empathic ability. Mean scores of junior high school and female students on the father`s acceptance scale were significantly higher than those of senior high school, university and female students, but those on the mother`s acceptance scale did not show significant differences between school level or sex. And mean scores of mother`s acceptance level were significantly higher than those of fathers. Finally, senior high school and university students were more empathic than junior high school students, females more empathic than males.
