I have inquired into Buddha's mission, Buddhist one in dynasty and the Great Master of Won Buddhism Sotaesan's one while my studgying the history of mission. If the history of every mission is to studied, the subject of study should be Buddhist mission in India, China, Korea and so on. However, I generally neglected to study the mission on account of limitted space and because I had concentrated my attention upon Sotaesan's mission.
Therfore the studying of general mission can not help being accomolished on another occasion.
But a public phenomenon trough the history of every mission is as follows;
First, the mission put into practice by means of three conditions (Deed, Word, Thought). I can see that word-mission of them had been centering in particular.
Second, the mission was parctised in relied of the poor, a call at homes and treatment of both individuals and society according to the proper time and affinity bond.
Third, the mission was also practiesed in proportion to human fundamental ability with infinite means. Individual, group and systematic mission was realized at any time when it had needed.
Buddha's mission had flown into king's family, the aristocracy, a party of priests and their disciples, while moreover he got brisk activity of his mission bytaking an interest in helping the poor.
Buddhist mission in Silla dynasty, embracing the past popular faith, laid stress on forming creative thought, enlightening all people, and leading individuals and society to the good way. Silla mission, which was based on Buddist thought, caused the youth to have their active standards with a nation-traditional thought through adopting and synthesizing the thought. We can also presume that its mission soldified all the more its footing as the protective religion to enrich Silla dynatty in benefiting the populace. So the hall for Baekgo Lecture( ) was set up with the power of sermons and scriptures.
Silla mission let the people to get moral influence and the deepeing of thought by priests, being high learned and virtuous. And its mission was to defend the father land relieve the masses, making all people to know that priests and laymen are in the same position, and to know that the concentrated whold mind is the eternal and impersonal reality behind all phenomena.
The Ven. Sotaesan gave courage and hope to the people under tyranny adn suppression of Japanese regime. He solidfied Won Buddhist foundations with the spirit of delignece and frugality as well as the principle that all great things grow from small things. He also enlightened the people as occasion might demand, by means of impartation by lips and heart.
Won Buddhist Great Master specially sought after truth there, wihtout leaving his native place, and took a close acquaintance and his friends at his home land as his disciples. The Great Master showed an especial instance not to find in the history of the world religions because he had founded Won Buddhism just at his brithplace.
The Venerabld Sotaesan was born under the Korean circumastances.
However, he did not accept mystery adn a miracle which then the leaders of the new religions had adopted ad the means of mission, and not also take the way to enlighten the populace through an incantation and a panacea. He played a religious role to indicate the right path of a human being, reform in humanity and improve society.
The Ven.Sotaesan, who was of splendid ability to carry out missionary activities, won the respect of his disciples as the savior of the world. While moreever he had handed down Korean traditional cultrue, Ⅱ-Wonism originated from him had presented a new direction for human spiritual cultrue.
Starting his life as an ordinary person, the Great Master suggested us infinite possibility at the time when he had been delivered from a sage's stage.
