This paper investigates the role of agricultural surplus on the national economy in the early stage of economic development by reviewing economic development experiences of both Korea and Japan. In general, the agricultural surplus is accumulated from the improvement of agricultural productivity. The agricultural surplus of Korea started in the 1970s, while Japan``s the agricultural surplus already started before World War I. The previous studies show that the relationship between the agricultural revolution and the industrialization is classified into two types: (1) the West Europe type in which the industrialization comes after the agricultural revolution, and (2) the Japan type in which the industrialization come with the agricultural revolution simultaneously. The result of this paper indicates that the economic development path of Korea is different from above two types. Since Korea has financed the capital for the industrialization through foreign investment, it is not necessary to accumulate agricultural surplus before or with the industrialization. As a result, the Korean economic development shows the unique path in which the agricultural surplus started after the industrialization.
