      Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the results of cement augmentation in the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures. Materials and Methods: Twenty eight patients who were treated with compression hip screws (CHS) augmented with cement (Group A), and they were compared with thirty two patients treated with CHS alone (Group B). The parameters, including the time of ambulation, time of fracture union, sliding distance and complication, were investigated. Results: There was not a significant difference in the mean operation time, bony union time and the sliding distance between group A and group B. The mean ambulation time of group A and group B was 6.8 days and 3.4 days, respectively. In group A, there were 2 cases of cut-through of the lag screw, cases of delayed union and 1 case of nonunion. Total hip arthroplasty was done for cut-through of the lag screw, and ipolar hemiarthroplasty was done for the patient with nonunion. In group B, migration of lag screw occurred in 1 patient who had anterosuperior placement of the lag screw in the femoral head. Conclusions: The use of cement augmentation enables early weight-bearing and educes the postoperative complications for the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures.
